Department of Southern Fruit Growing

Works with fruit crops in the Nikitsky garden were started by H.Kh. Stiven in 1812, the orchard was laid, 74 nurseries planted mostly fruit and berry trees and shrubs. In 1815 the assortment of the growing material contained about 770 items. Further intensive development of these works in the XIX century belongs to NA. Gartvis. In the Soviet period of the Nikitsky garden, a significant role in our country was played by the research of I.N. Ryabova and K.F. Kostinoy. In 1923, the Department of Southern Fruit Growing was organized, which until 1978 was headed by Professor I.N. Ryabov. In 1937, the Department of Sub-tropical Fruit Crops, which is headed by Professor A.A. Richter. From 1978 to 1994, the management of works on the development of industrial gardening was carried out by the doctor of agricultural sciences. Sciences, prof., V.K. Smykov. In 1997, the department of subtropical and nut-bearing crops, led from 1978 to 1997 by A.A. Yadrovym again became part of the department of fruit crops, which is now called the department of southern fruit crops.
As a result of many years of work on introduction and selection, the staff of the department collected a large gene pool of stone, seed, nut-bearing and subtropical fruit crops, numbering about 7,400 varieties and forms, located in the Central, Steppe and Novo-Kakhov branches of the NBS-NSC. It is based on selection work using traditional (intraspecific and remote hybridization) and new (biotechnology, experimental mutagenesis, etc.) ) Techniques to develop new, modern varieties of peach, nectarine, decorative peach, apricot, cherry plum, plum, cherries, cherry, apple, pear, quince, henomelesa, almond, walnut, Jujube, pomegranates, figs, persimmons, olives, Actinidia, Feijoa, hazelnut, azimine, Asian pear, lemon. A study of the gene pool and breeding for the period from 1928 to 2007 on a range of agronomic characters on the ICG adopted more than 300 varieties of fruits, 70 – nut and subtropical; regionalized and included in the Register 43 varieties of plant varieties of fruit crops (including decorative peach varieties 6) and grades nut 38 and subtropical plants. Walnut, zizifus, pomegranate, fig, persimmon, olive, actinidia, feijoa, hazelnut, azimine, Asian pear, lemon. As a result of studying the gene pool and breeding for the period from 1928 to 2007, more than 300 varieties of fruit crops, 70 – nut-bearing and subtropical, were taken for the complex of economically valuable signs on the ICG; 43 varieties of fruit crops (including 6 varieties of decorative peach) and 38 varieties of nut-bearing and subtropical plants are regionalized and included in the Register of Plant Varieties. Walnut, zizifus, pomegranate, fig, persimmon, olive, actinidia, feijoa, hazelnut, azimine, Asian pear, lemon.

Since 1994, the department has been headed by A.V. Smykov, candidate of agricultural sciences. Sciences.
